Judging the Lottey Competition Summer 2025

This week, the focus in the club room wasn’t on taking photos, but on critiquing them! We put our artistic biases to the test by judging the submissions for our ever-popular Lottey Comp.

The entries, all captured during recent club outings, transported us across the region and through time!

Themes included the natural beauty of Cromwell Bottom Nature Reserve, York Gate Gardens, and Golden Acre Park; the historic architecture of Skipton Castle; a journey back in time with the 1940s weekend in Howarth; and a fantastic section dedicated to the exciting energy of Bradford City of Culture 2025.

Armed with score sheets, every member became a judge, assigning a mark out of 20 points to each photograph. All the points were tallied and average scores were added together for each submission to determine the winners.

It was a fascinating and highly educational exercise. Watching the variety of scores come in demonstrated just how subjective photography truly is. One person’s perfect composition might be another’s technical fault, sparking great conversations about what makes a winning competition image.

This process is invaluable for sharpening our critical eye. By carefully analysing the work of others, we gain insights we can immediately apply to our own shooting.

A big congratulations to the winner, Pat Belson, with a total score of 85.6, whose images successfully navigated the diverse opinions in the room! The runner up in second place, with 85.3 points was Phil Belson and in third place with 84.9 points was Jeremy Double.

Thank you to everyone who submitted their work and helped make this a focused and fun night.
