Lighting Up Our Lenses: A Portrait Workshop with Steve Rayner

This week, the club room was buzzing with a focus that was brighter than usual, thanks to our fantastic practical workshop: “An Evening with Steve Rayner.”

Steve Rayner joined us to demystify the art of portrait lighting, offering a hands-on session that took us through the surprising variety of looks achievable with just a few studio lights. The atmosphere was wonderfully relaxed and collaborative, with many of our brave members volunteering to take the hot seat as our portrait subject for the night.

The Power of Light and Shadow

This wasn’t just a talk; it was a chance to put theory into practice. Members moved around the subject, cameras and even smartphones in hand, capturing the subtle—and not-so-subtle—changes in mood as Steve adjusted the position and power of the lights.

It was a real eye-opener to discover the sheer range of lighting styles available. From classic Rembrandt lighting to the dramatic Split light, we learned how a simple tweak could completely transform the subject’s features and the overall feeling of the photograph.

The lighting style that truly intrigued many of us was the aptly named “Badger” lighting! This unusual technique, which creates deep shadows under the eyes, was a fascinating demonstration of how light can be used to achieve specific, high-impact, and even humorous results.

A Brilliant Takeaway

If there’s one thing we all took away from the evening, it’s that effective portraiture isn’t just about the person; it’s about the light you use to reveal them. A huge thank you to Steve Rayner for sharing his expertise and to all the members who stepped up to model and photograph. We can’t wait to see how everyone applies these new lighting tricks in future competitions and projects!
